A respected attorney, longtime Alabama legislator, district judge, and beloved family man, John Amari leaves behind a remarkable legacy defined not only by professional success but by compassion, generosity, humor, and an unwavering dedication to people.
Born on August 7, 1948, in Jefferson County, Alabama, John Amari was the proud son of Sicilian immigrants whose hard work and values shaped the course of his life. Growing up, he worked alongside his family on their farm and at the well-known Huffman Curb Market in Trussville, where generations of local families came for fresh produce and friendly conversation. Those early experiences grounded him in humility, service, and community connection—qualities that remained with him throughout his life.
A graduate of Banks High School, the University of Montevallo, and Cumberland School of Law, John founded the Amari Law Firm in 1974 and quickly built a respected legal career. Yet what truly distinguished him was not simply his legal skill, but the compassion with which he practiced law. According to his family, when individuals needed legal help but could not afford representation, John often accepted trades of labor or services instead of payment, believing everyone deserved support and fairness regardless of financial circumstances.
His deep care for people naturally led him into public service. In 1978, he was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives, proudly crediting his victory to being “Mae and Joe’s son from the Curb Market.” Just four years later, he earned election to the Alabama Senate, where he faithfully served for more than 16 years. In 2008, John continued his commitment to justice and community as a district judge for Alabama’s 10th Judicial Circuit, serving with integrity and compassion for another decade.
Family members remember him as someone who could unite people from every background with laughter and warmth. “He could walk into a room full of people who disagreed about everything and leave with them laughing together,” his obituary lovingly stated.
Above all else, John cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Teresa “Terri” Parker Amari, their five children, 17 grandchildren, and a large extended family who adored him deeply.
